Did Punxsutawney Phil see a shadow on Groundhog Day 2025?

Groundhog Day 2025: Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter!

As tradition goes, on February 2nd, all eyes were on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as the world’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerged from his burrow to make his much-anticipated weather prediction. And this year, winter lovers rejoice—Phil saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of cold and snow!

This marks the 139th year of this quirky American tradition, where Phil, the celebrated weather-predicting woodchuck, either forecasts an early spring or an extended winter. According to historical records, prior to 2025, Phil had seen his shadow 107 times, compared to just 21 times where he didn’t—suggesting that he’s a bit of a winter fan!

A Nation Divided: Other Groundhogs Disagree

While Phil may have predicted a longer winter, he wasn’t the only furry forecaster weighing in. Other famous groundhogs across the country—Buckeye Chuck (Ohio), Staten Island Chuck (New York), and General Beauregard Lee (Georgia)—each made their own predictions.

This year, the results were split:

  • Buckeye Chuck & Staten Island Chuck predicted an early spring
  • Phil & General Beauregard Lee called for more winter

So, who’s right? Statistically, Phil’s accuracy over the years has been a modest 35%, according to NOAA data. Meanwhile, Staten Island Chuck has a far better track record, with an 85% accuracy rate—so maybe spring is closer than we think!

A Historic Year for Phil: Welcoming Newborns!

This year’s Groundhog Day was extra special because it was Phil’s first as a father! In March 2024, he and his partner, Phyllis, welcomed two baby groundhogs, making Phil the first recorded groundhog dad since the tradition began in 1886. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club excitedly announced the news, saying, “We have babies!”

The Origins of Groundhog Day

The tradition of Groundhog Day traces its roots back to Candlemas Day, a Christian holiday where candles were blessed to predict the remainder of winter. German settlers brought the tradition to America, swapping hedgehogs (common in Europe) for groundhogs, which were more plentiful in Pennsylvania.

Today, the event has grown into a full-fledged spectacle, drawing crowds of up to 40,000 to Punxsutawney and reaching millions worldwide via livestreams. As members of the top hat-wearing Inner Circle read the groundhog’s “forecast,” fans celebrate—whether they’re hoping for warm spring days or one last snowball fight.

So, will Phil’s prediction hold true? Only time will tell! Until then, bundle up—just in case. ❄️🌨️
